Labor Ministry of Central government is setting up discussions with State government to improve compliance with Creche Center’s under the amendment of Maternity Benefit Act, 2017 – which mandates that offices with 50 or more employees to setup Child Care Facility (Creche Center’s) for working mothers.

Maternity Benefit Act Amendment states that the establishment needs to provide Child Care Facility either within the campus or separately within 500 meters and the working mother should be allowed to visit the facility center four times a day to take care of her child/children. This will include the interval of rest allowed to her. Child Care Facility should be suitable to accommodate 6 years aged children or below with suitable rooms to take care.

For the effective implementation of this provision under the amended Maternity Benefit ruling, the Act provides that the appropriate government shall frame such rules prescribing amenities and facilities that are required to be provided in the Creche Center.

An employer may permit a woman to work from home. This would apply if the nature of work assigned to the woman permits her to work from home. This option can be availed of, after the period of maternity leave, for a duration that is mutually decided by the employer and the woman.

Every establishment should intimate a woman at the time of her appointment of the maternity benefits available to her. Such communication must be in writing and electronically.

Maternity Benefit Amendment Act, 2017 is an welcome move among working  mothers from government, if implemented strictly with high compliance – Working mothers will benefit more..!!
